Ah! Major Sarah J Maas vibes~!
And if you know anything about me, you might know that I LOVE SJM. Like her books are incredible to me, I always try to reread one of her series’ a year. So good!
In this dual perspective novel we follow two charming (not that charming) characters. Princess Lira, the daughter of the Siren Queen, who is known to eat the hearts of Princes–and only Princes. Then there’s Prince Elian, who’s more of a pirate than a prince (but they both start with ‘p’, so who’s to argue?). Princess Lira defies her mother’s orders, and in return is turned into the one thing she hates… a human. As fate would have it, the Prince that wishes nothing more than to kill the Siren that kills Princes, and the Siren that wants nothing more than to slay the handsome pirate prince, meet in the most unlikely circumstances.
If you’re after a really good adventure set to make you laugh… and sometimes cringe, then this is the book for you! I really enjoyed how it was written and definitely didn’t want to put it down. It was just fun!
There are a few issues with the world building and characterisation. The author says ‘massive ship’ and ‘hundreds of people’ but the book screams a small ship with a handful of crew. The author says ‘100 kingdoms’ and the books screams ‘maybe 10…at most’. It’s a detail that can become a little annoying, perhaps even to the point of funny, but if you disregard that piece of information, it’s a really great read!
The break down of my rating:
Style & Tone: 9/10
Enjoyment Factor: 10/10
