This book is told in prose and despite thinking I wouldn’t like how it was told at the beginning, I actually loved it. Following Joe, the much younger brother of a convicted criminal, we learn about how his life has been since his brother was locked away ten years ago.
Now seventeen, Joe’s on a mission to see his brother before the unfortunate countdown comes to an end. He has to know if he did it, or is his brother innocent like he claims?
It’s a brilliant novel of trust and compassion, but it also gives the reader a glimpse of the ugly world that hides in the shadows of everyday life. It’s a very quick read that will grab at your heart and tug you along for the ride.
I recommend a box of tissues and a warm drink when reading this one, because comfort is something you’ll need. You might just have the desire to call up a sibling and see how they’re doing. If you weren’t sure on this one before, or haven’t heard of it until now, I highly recommend giving it a go.
The break down of my rating:
Plot: 9/10
Characterisation: 8/10
Development: 7/10
Style & Tone: 9/10
Enjoyment Factor: 8/10
