BEFORE I LET GO – Marieke Nijkamp (Honest Review)

SPOILER FREE!

Genre: Young Adult – Mental Health/Mystery
Target Audience: 14+
Rating: F (28%)
Goodreads Rating: 2/5

This novel follows the story of a young girl named Corey, who was best friends with Kyra, but that was before she moved away, and long before Kyra went missing. Determined to find out what happened to her best friend, Corey returns to the small town of Lost Creek determined to get some answers, only to find that no one seems to be looking.

I was expecting to love this novel. I have a heart for mental health issues, and for mysteries, but this one didn’t land how it should. I know that if I discovered this book ten years before now, I probably would have loved it to bits, but as of right now, after reading it, I couldn’t help but feel that it was missing something. That the substance that made it good and realistic wasn’t there, and without it, the book fell apart.

It’s definitely not my favourite book. The format of the novel kept changing, which constantly shook me from the story, which wasn’t very compelling from the beginning. I felt as if the narrative constantly repeated itself, and it was lacking substance. I’m definitely very disappointed, but can only hope that someone loved this one more than me.

The break down of my rating:
Plot:
3/10
Characterisation: 3/10
Development:
3/10
Style & Tone: 3/10
Enjoyment Factor: 2/10
