Book one in the Androma Saga.

Alsberg - ZenithGenre: Science Fiction – Dystopian
Target Audience: 14+ (contains violent scenes)
Rating:
D (34%)
Goodreads Rating: 2/5

This is Sasha’s debut novel and Lindsay’s third series. A unique team writing a bangin’ novel. (Because there’s guns in the book, get it? Boom, boom, tschh! (That was drums, not another pun, but I’ll take it if you laughed :P.))

Goodreads description:
Most know Androma Racella as the Bloody Baroness, a powerful mercenary whose reign of terror stretches across the Mirabel Galaxy. To those aboard her glass starship, Marauder, however, she’s just Andi, their friend and fearless leader.
But when a routine mission goes awry, the Marauder’s all-girl crew is tested as they find themselves in a treacherous situation and at the mercy of a sadistic bounty hunter from Andi’s past.
Meanwhile, across the galaxy, a ruthless ruler waits in the shadows of the planet Xen Ptera, biding her time to exact revenge for the destruction of her people. The pieces of her deadly plan are about to fall into place, unleashing a plot that will tear Mirabel in two.
Andi and her crew embark on a dangerous, soul-testing journey that could restore order to their shipor just as easily start a war that will devour worlds. As the Marauder hurtles toward the unknown, and Mirabel hangs in the balance, the only certainty is that in a galaxy run on lies and illusion, no one can be trusted.

I received this as an uncorrected proof from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review, and you bet your sweet ass that’s what they’re gonna get!

I should also mention that I’ve been a huge fan of Sasha Alsberg on YouTube for quite some time. If you want to check her out, her username is abookutopia and she’s a pretty hilarious and amazing booktuber! The reason I am pointing out that I’m such a big fan of Sasha, is that I don’t want to hide anything. I respect Sasha and I love the content she posts on YouTube, however, I will be rating this novel exactly how it should be, honestly and honestly? I wasn’t a massive fan.

This book is about SPACE PIRATES, and that sounds freaking amazing! That sounds like a massive adventure story with *pow pow* here and *bam bam* there. Show me the death! I mean, there was plenty of death, and there was plenty of action scenes, they just didn’t seem well thought out. The writing just seemed… eh.

The plot has potential, but currently it’s just really predictable. There may have been one scene – only ONE – where I was surprised by what happened. I was guessing the entire book and that was just boring. It was a chore to get through this novel. All I wanted was to enjoy it, I didn’t mind if it was an easy read or one with a ton of description, but I was getting frustrated by everything. I wish it was a book I could give a high rating and proudly proclaim that I loved it, and shove it in the face of everyone saying that they should read it, devour it – but I can’t.

The characterisation was okay. The characters remained true to themselves. Their personalities were individual and unique, however, in the first half, I just didn’t care about any of them. If one died, it wouldn’t have affected me. Actually, it probably would have surprised me – and freaking hell, wouldn’t that have been good?! By the second half of the novel, I was finally starting to come around to them, maybe because all of my frustration and annoyance had been fuelled into everything else that I was desperately trying to find something good.

As much as I’ve complained, I don’t hate this book. The second-half (actually more like final third) picked up. It was easier to read, but it never really got better, you know what I mean? I was able to enjoy it, but I wouldn’t claim that it was good, and maybe that’s harsh, but it’s the truth.

Maybe my expectations were high from this deadly duo, Lindsay having writing and publishing experience and Sasha so well known in the Booktube community. There’s a chance I entered this novel with greater things in mind, but I doubt that. I probably won’t be picking up the sequel.

The break down of my rating:
Plot: 4/10
Characterisation: 4/10
Development:
 3/10
Style & Tone: 3/10
Enjoyment Factor: 3/10

  1. The majority of friends and friends who’ve read this have expressed similar opinions… sadly I’ve concluded that I won’t be picking this up – not when there are so many great unread sci-fi selections out there. I hate saying that it’s not worth picking up, but in this case, there’s a huge need for improvement.
